Covid-19: The importance of keeping safe

For the past several weeks there has been an ongoing scurry for ‘self-protection’ as the world tackles the grappling wave of the “monstrous coronavirus, also called COVID-19. The world continues to plunge in a deeper and tighter bind as this non-partial epidemic reaches more and more countries increasing positive testing cases and sadly the death rate.

One vital tool that has been proven to efficiently decrease the spread of the virus is cleanliness. If there’s never a time that more persons are beginning to become more hygienic and precise about direct contact with unclean surfaces it is now. Importantly, keeping yourself and your family safe during this period should be the number one priority. The COVID-19 pandemic has now driven many people to take a closer look at what we touch and clean.

The virus spreads when a person coughs or sneezes respiratory droplets. These can spread “onto hard surfaces or onto our hands, which we then touch things with, transferring the virus from our hands to the surfaces we touch. With varying timeline as to how long the virus may last on certain surfaces, it is imperative to be vigilant and take the precautions to eliminate the spread.

There are several places in our immediate environment whereby contact is direct and frequent, therefore extreme care must be given.

Household members should educate themselves about COVID-19 symptoms and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in homes. This can be achieved by consistently practicing routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. For example tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks, and electronics.

Secondly, for cars, be sure to clean and wipe down the inside of the vehicle including steering wheel, gear shift, door and dashboard. Also the seat, door handle, seat belts and any exposed surfaces using a damp cloth with a small amount of soap.

Workplaces are another hotspot. Employers should encourage employees to routinely clean all frequently touched surfaces in the workplace. Such as keyboards, remote controls, desks, countertops, and doorknobs.
